About Us

Area of Activity

LAVI's activities are organized into three main areas: Acoustics, Vibrations, and Dynamics, each encompassing different lines of research and applications.

Modeling, Monitoring, and Diagnostics of Machines and Structures

Application of computational and data-driven models, instrumentation, and signal processing for predictive maintenance and fault diagnosis in rotating machines and structures. Use of Artificial Intelligence tools (e.g., Machine Learning).

Drilling String Dynamics

Computational modeling and experimental testing. Dynamic evaluation and stability analysis. Fluid-structure interaction. Drill-rock interaction. Uniaxial and multiaxial, low- and high-cycle fatigue analysis.

Noise and Vibration Control

Analysis of the effects of noise on human health, environmental impact, and legislation. Development of solutions for active and passive noise and vibration control in various environments and systems.

Sound Source Identification and Signal Processing

Investigation of noise generation mechanisms in turbulent flows and vibroacoustics, including advanced identification and localization techniques, such as beamforming and wavelets. Computational modeling of the acoustic behavior of environments, using simulation, virtual reality, and sound quality analysis.

Acoustic Materials

Development and characterization of materials for sound absorption and acoustic transmission control.

Stochastic Modeling and System Identification

Construction of probabilistic models to quantify uncertainties in parameters, vectors, functions, and matrices of mechanical systems. Assessment of the impact of uncertainties on system response. Risk assessment. Robust optimization. Material characterization and identification of mechanical system parameters. Bayesian approach. Acoustics

History

Created in the 1970s, LAVI emerged as one of the first academic centers specializing in acoustics and vibrations in Brazil, responding to the growing demand for studies in these areas. Since its founding, it has been an important research center within COPPE/UFRJ, contributing to the training of qualified professionals and the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Initially focused on measuring and analyzing acoustic and vibration signals, the laboratory has expanded its activities over the years, incorporating new technologies and methodologies. The infrastructure was improved with the acquisition of modern equipment, such as laser sensors, thermal imagers, and high-resolution cameras, enabling more advanced investigations.

In addition to academic development, LAVI has always maintained a strong connection with the manufacturing sector, establishing strategic partnerships with companies and government agencies. Projects with Petrobras, Cepel, Furnas, and Infraero have driven applied research in areas such as noise control, vibroacoustics, and nonlinear system dynamics. This connection with industry has solidified the laboratory as a national reference center.

In recent years, LAVI has begun exploring new frontiers, such as modeling nonlinear systems, modeling and simulating intelligent systems, and the use of artificial intelligence techniques for modeling and monitoring dynamic systems. The laboratory continues to evolve, always aligned with technological and scientific demands, reinforcing its prominent role in academia and industry.
